Well, I lost everything but the guitars in London, England. I found myself with just the clothes on my back and the guitars. I have been there before, so we were ok. Things are looking up. Family sent some shirts, and the shows have been killer. Especially the last couple of shows in Germany. Thanks to all for the well wishes. Best thing you can do for us is just keep spreading the Big Damn Word.

Here is the text... Thanks to them for including us... what an honor...

ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- You don't have to tell the Reverend J. Peyton that these are hard times in Indiana. He's been seeing it for years.

The Reverend J. Peyton leads the Big Damn Band in playing the blues.

Even down south in rural Brown County, which the country-blues guitarist and his Big Damn Band call home, the struggles on "Main Street" are more than just a political catchphrase. They're a reality.

The Rev, as he likes to be called, is well aware of the hardships elsewhere in his state, too. In the northern Indiana county of Elkhart, where President Obama held a highly publicized town hall meeting to discuss the economy and his stimulus package, the unemployment rate has more than tripled over the past year to almost 19 percent -- more than double the national average.

"The writing's been on the wall for a long time," says The Rev. "To me, this isn't anything new. It's new that people are covering it -- it's new that it's on the news."

The Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band, made up of The Rev, his wife Breezy on washboard and his brother Jayme on drums, has been touring the country almost nonstop for several years, and they've had a chance to see the harsh realities of the American dream up close. They've made their personal struggles, their family's setbacks and stories from people they meet into lyrical fodder -- and despite the grim subject matter, put on an enthusiastically upbeat, memorable performance in each town they play. Video Watch the Big Damn Band perform "Worn Out Shoe" »

"We don't take it lightly," The Rev says. "I just hope that when people come to the show, we're able to make them feel a lot of different things -- make 'em laugh with us and make 'em hurt with us."

It's a tradition as old as the blues.

The Rev says on the band's Web site, "I feel like I got to directly be involved in a song. Maybe if I played a different genre of music I'd feel like I could get away with [making stuff up], but this style of music is too honest; you can't lie to people, because they'll see right through it."

For The Rev, part of being brutally honest also means keeping it simple, allowing listeners to be engaged with the music without having to search for hidden meaning. Among the songs from the band's latest album, "The Whole Fam Damnily," are "Can't Pay the Bill," "The Creek's Are All Bad" and "Walmart Killed the Country Store."

The band gets its ideas from personal experience, says The Rev.

"I ain't got cable where I live," he says. "I stay up on current events as well as I can, but I don't really draw from newspapers. I draw from my family and friends."

Reviewers have praised the work. "The band bring to their retro-fabricated rootsy Americana an utterly gripping compulsion," wrote the (UK) Independent's Andy Gill, giving "The Whole Fam Damnily" four out of five stars. The Big Damn Band is also the cover story in the April/May issue of Blues Review magazine.

What the songs purposefully lack in lyrical flair is made up in sparkling musicianship. The Rev picks his way across old standard-tuned National resonators and acoustic guitars, adding a little slide here and there; Breezy rattles away with metal-tipped baseball batting gloves and washboard, while Jayme keeps rhythm on a rather modest drum set, highlighted by a 5-gallon pickle bucket.
advertisement

It's simple, heartfelt country blues at its best, played by a family that revels in its blood ties. And that's good enough for The Rev.

"You get by through things that don't cost much, like music, like laughter, like food. You know, those are the things that I think get you by."

I heard your band at the Knitting Factory out here in Los Angeles a while back. I had a friend from Indiana visiting, and my friend Simon Stokes was on the bill that night, so we managed to attend. I was, of course, expecting a big band--I used to have a 40-piece one, but that's another story. I got where you were going with this, but the sound was not clear enough for me to grasp all the words going by.

A visit to your site has given me enough info to get a better handle on what you're doing, and convince me that you're the real deal.

We lived in Brown County back in the 1960s, out on Wallow Hollow Road, off of Clay Lick Road. We had a little shop in Nashville, I also ran a silent movie theater for a while, and played piano for it, I also published a tourist magazine for a year. It was a good time, but I had to work too hard to get by.

We moved to the city so I could make a living in music, which worked out great for us, but sometimes I miss those hills and my wish is that you can do well enough to stay put.

My musical trade is quite different from yours--for 30-some years I've played piano in the Neil Diamond band. My listening tastes, however, run pretty wide, and I've heard enough of the Big Damn Band to know that it's in my range of appreciation.

Keep up the good work and I'll buy your damn CD.

Hey all. I'd been working on finger picking and the alternating bass for about a year and a half before I got it down. It happened about two days after I saw the band in Rochester and had talked to the Rev about it. Anyway, I would be willing to work on and tab out some of the songs. I have Sugar Man down and I am in the midst of Left Hand George. What I will do is give you the melody notes and bass notes and all you have to do is listen for how to put them together. Doing it any other way would be really difficult because I learn all of the songs, new or old, by ear and feel. Let me know if anyone is interested. Cheers!

First off, let me say, I am sorry for your loss in the family.

It was by a friend that we made the trip of only about 5 miles to the park in Switzerland where we for the first time ever watched and listened with a jaw dropping awe to your show. The music was awesome, the performance was good and just saying hello to you afterwards was enough to make the day unbeatable.

We road down on our bikes and enjoyed a few hours there, and left soon after your show. The music was so good that myself and the other to firefighters that I went with all bought something, and I am, at this very moment at the station now, listening on my ipod to worn out shoe.

I just wanted to write and say good job. Their are not many shows at all that I pay or drive to see. Mainly because the music it seems today has lost its appeal to me. However, like I said, if you guys ever come back around north Florida, I hope to be sitting in a chair or on a hay bail enjoying some good music and fun times, as we yell, "one bottle of wine" lol.

All my best, and Prayers for your lost,

Hey, I'm David Gregg. I've seen the Big Damn Band both times they've played in Detroit, and I thought they were a ton of fun to listen to and experience! The thing that's got me really excited is that I'm studying abroad in Berlin this summer, so I'm gonna get to see them again when they play at the White Trash on May 25! I've even been there before, so you guys will have at least me an whoever I can bring along to cheer you on and sing along with! I can't wait!!

Hello Big Damn Fans!

We are back out on the road and enjoying the weather in the Florida. We have received some great news in the past couple of weeks, including that our new video for Mama's Fried Potatoes has been picked up by many outlets including MTV Latin America. Ever wanted to see what a potato gun does to a watermelon or a jug of milk? You can view the video on youtube or on our myspace page at www.myspace.com/therevpeytonsbigdamnband . We are also excited to announce that we will be playing several weeks of the Van's Warped Tour this year (primarily in the American West). Pre-sale tickets go on up on April 1st.

We have a lot of new shows added to our spring/summer schedule, including 6 weeks in Europe starting at the beginning of May. Please help us spread the word by emailing and telling your friends we are coming to their area or send them over to view our most recent photo blog road journal at www.bigdamnband.com . Stop by our fan forum area too, and let us know what you have been up to.

We are featured in the latest issue of Blues Revue Magazine, the largest blues publication in the world, and they said... "His playing style melded the delicate elements of Mississippi John Hurt's music, the vocal anguish and slash-and-burn acoustic slide styles of Charley Patton and Son House, the rebelliousness and everyman storytelling of folk icon Woody Guthrie, and a hint of Americana rock of the kind performed by Scarecrow era John Mellencamp, also an Indiana native." -Will Romano, BLUES REVUE MAGAZINE. Check it out too!

We are very sorry to report that we have had a death in our family. There is no need to send anything but thoughts or prayers. Unfortunately Lafayette, LA, New Orleans, LA, Tallahassee, FL and Gainesville, FL will have to be postponed to a later date. The following shows are still very much ON, and we hope that if you were planning on coming to one of the shows that had to be canceled maybe you can roadtrip to another. If not we promise to return as fast as we can. I know you will understand, but it is still tough. Help us get the word out about Tampa, Orlando, and Switzerland, FL so we can return to the tour in fine form. See yall in the Sunshine state.
